We have a pretty short drive today which I am excited about! We made our frozen waffles in the morning and decided to have a rematch of connect four. Don’t worry I won AGAIN! Taylor was not thrilled.

Goðafoss, Northern Iceland

We had a little extra time today so we backtracked a little to stop at Goðafoss, the most popular waterfall in northern Iceland. It literally translates to “waterfall of the gods”. This was definitely the busiest place we have stopped so far in northern Iceland but it makes sense since we saw online there was a cruise ship docked in Akureyri, only an hour away. This waterfall was awesome, we were able to see it from above as well as climb down to the bottom for some pictures.

We looked across the horizon and saw an extremely vibrant rainbow! As we left the parking lot there was a guy hitch hiking that we struck up a conversation with so we decided to give him a ride. His name was Daniel, originally from Hungary but living in France. He was going to Mývatn (we are going there tomorrow) which was further east than where we were going but we were able to take him about 12 kilometers and dropped him off where we turned to go north toward Húsavík. We shared a couple fun stories and enjoyed our time with him.

We arrived in Húsavík and the hotel said our room was ready early! We were excited to get the bags out of the car and use the restroom before walking around town to grab a bite to eat. This was the first place that had two twin beds pushed together with a queen bed mattress topper on it, but it worked and no sulphur shower!

Things to Do in Húsavík, Iceland

We walked about 15 minutes to JaJa Ding Ding, a local restaurant that has the EuroVision museum connected to it. Húsavík was the set location for Will Ferrell's Netflix movie "Eurovision Song Contest", they filmed a lot of the movie actually in Húsavík and used locals as extras in the film! The museum had the used costumes and props which was pretty cool! They interestingly said this exhibit was closing soon and they were going to reopen a space museum that was priorly there.

We were starving at this point and randomly walked past this tiny restaurant, Disu Cafe. We wandered in based off the small bites and pastries sign, and thank goodness we did. I will dream about this Cookie Butter Cinnamon Roll we had, honestly it deserves its own post. It was so sweet I could feel the cavity forming in my mouth. For some substance Taylor got a chicken and pesto sandwich, I opted for the cheese and poppy seed roll up.

Whale Watching in Iceland

Húsavík is the whale watching capital of the world so we couldn't pass through without giving it a shot. Neither Taylor nor I have ever seen a whale so we were super excited at the thought of it! We got into our overalls/rain jackets and climbed aboard the old wooden Icelandic fishing boat. There were about 20 people on our tour, not overly crowded. We got super lucky and saw two humpback whales, a few minke whales and a pod of northern bottlenose whales. The trip was 3 hours and by the end we were really feeling the waves and ready to get off.

We saw the town's famous church but there was also a funeral here today so we did not enter or want to disturb. We were pretty tired at this point and decided to grab a quick dinner and head to bed. We went to the most convenient place by the hotel and harbor called Salka Restaurant, it was very ok at best. I got fish and chips for the second time this trip and Taylor got a cheese pizza. The breadsticks were actually pretty good though.

Follow along as we head further east tomorrow!

Ben :)
