Today is a long travel day, we are going straight down the eastern coast and starting our journey in the south. Today is our last day in what feels like the middle of nowhere and we will start seeing lots of tour buses after today! Our first stop was Seyðisfjörður which is at the end of the fjord with the same name and is a cruise port for very small ships. The road to get there was very steep and very windy but we saw some really cool waterfalls along the way. This was also the road the famous longboarding scene from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was filmed and we saw this cool rainbow brick road in the little town.
Driving Iceland's Ring Road
We stopped at a little gas station for some food on the way out of town and it was definitely not the best meal we had this trip. The ham and cheese sandwiches were ok but the white chocolate matcha roll we had was actually disappointingly quite gross.
We are off on the road! It was cool to drive straight along the coast but after 4 hours it kind of got old. I always use cruise control at all times, at all speeds, but was frustrated it rained the entire time so i wasn't able to turn it on. This was also the first time we experienced one way bridges and a 6 kilometer tunnel to get through one of the fjords! Taylor took a little nap after a couple hours, and for those wondering we had Christmas music on.
We finally arrived at Hotel Hofn and got to our room! I will admit this bathroom was VERY interesting. When Taylor took the first shower we realized the floor was not slanted nor was there anything stopping water from running across the floor, so the entire bathroom got soaked. The bed was fine but the tv did not really work.
We went across the street and grabbed dinner at Kaffi Hornid, which we both loved. I got the lobster pasta and Taylor opted for the basil pesto cashew pasta. But of course we had to get a sweet treat, and this was one of the best ones yet! Chocolate brownie with ice cream and caramel sauce, 10/10.
Excited for a short drive tomorrow!
Ben :)
