Today we are heading to the airport for our last night in Iceland! We decided to take the scenic route through Thingvellir National Park. This is where the Althing was founded, which is the oldest surviving parliament and the summer home of the prime minister. This as well is where the two tectonic plates are that caused the Almannagja fault. It was really pretty driving around the largest natural lake in all of Iceland.
We made it to Reykjavik! Just on the outskirts of the city we stopped at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, the only catholic cathedral in the country. The church was very pretty and was designed by the same architects that designed most churches in Iceland. We also made a pit stop to see the Althing (parliament) downtown.
Recognize the food? We had talked the last 2 weeks about the sushi we had on day 1 and decided we needed to get it again. We noticed it was SIGNIFICANTLY busier in the city and places we had previously been, then we turned the corner and noticed there were 2 cruise ships in port! We grabbed another creme brulee donut and headed toward the airport.
We finally made it to the Courtyard Marriott near the airport, it was about 5 minutes from the airport but right beside the rental car drop off! The room had the fabled Marriott smell which always gives good memories and we were excited to just rest for an extra couple hours today.
Before we got too comfy we dropped the car off, which we named Howie. Even through all those dirt roads and pot holes miraculously no damage was reported. We got a quick bite to eat from the restaurant connected to the hotel and brought it back to the room. We watched Kingsman: The Golden Circle and it was pretty good!
Have an early morning tomorrow!
Ben :)
