Today was a short drive, and the weather was much better than yesterday! We grabbed a couple protein bars for the road and set off for our first hike of the day. We did need to backtrack a little but was well worth it because of the wind, rain, and fog yesterday.
Must-Visit Stops on the Ring Road
First stop was Múlagljúfur Canyon! This for sure was one of my favorite stops of the whole trip. Round trip we almost hiked 3 hours which is not like the typical tourist destinations in the southern coast. This was much less crowded which was nice. The hike was through the dirt and grass instead of a paved walkway or gravel. It was fun but also a little nerve wracking having to go through the wide streams!
Our next stop was Skaftafell, a nature reserve with both a glacier and waterfalls. We hiked for about an hour to see the specific area and glacier that they used for Dr. Mann's planet in the movie Interstellar! It was starting to get very windy and cold the closer we got to the glacier.
We made two other quick pitstops on the way to the hotel for the night, another waterfall and then the more famous canyon in the south. We saw this waterfall on the side of the road and weren’t planning to stop but evidently it’s named and everything, they call it Stjórnarfoss. The canyon we stopped at was Fjadrárgljúfur, but was very touristy and a little underwhelming after the first one we saw.
We finally made it to Vik! We are staying at the Vik Apartments which were cheap, nice and spacious. The weather was starting to take a turn for the worse so we were glad we arrived before it got dark! Evidently it rains every single day in Vik. There is a joke that goes, a man walks up to a kid and asks him how long it’s been raining, the boy replied, I don’t know sir I’m only 7.
Dinner in Vik, Iceland
Taylor had a meeting and she’s shy so she kicked me out! I ran across the street and grabbed a drink while I waited. We ended up having dinner from the same place, it was called Ströndin Pub. The food was okay, I got wings and calamari and Taylor got spaghetti, for a sweet treat we opted for the chocolate brownie of course! Dessert was the best part!
Tomorrow we'll see how rainy Vik truly is!
